SEX TIP #6
Dear sex tip counselor, Do birth control pills make you hairy? I’m thinking about starting to take them because neither my boyfriend or I like using condoms (I’m allergic) and we don’t want to have unprotected sex. Actually, we like unprotected sex, but we don’t want to risk getting pregnant! I’ve heard that the stuff in birth control pills can make your boobs bigger, but that you also get hairy. I don’t want to get hairy, please help me out. Jennifer
Dear Jennifer, The most common side effects of the pill are headaches, nausea, a change in intensity of sexual desire and response, a possible increase in urinary tract infections, changes in menstrual flow, skin problems, gum inflammation, and as you mentioned breast growth. Most women will see hormonal changes that don’t affect their hair, however. In fact, it’s usually later in life, when a woman’s estrogen level drops, that they show an increase in the growth of both facial and body hair. You should consult a physician (if you haven’t already done so) to check into all the potential side effects of taking the pill. Also, if you’re allergic to the latex in condoms, which is the most common form of allergy, you may want to try natural condoms, like lamb-skin, in addition to a birth control cream. As always, any form of unprotected sex still presents risks, even if pregnancy is not one of them.
