Dear sex tip counselor,
I need some advice. I want to ask this girl to the prom, but I’m nervous as hell every time I get around her. I know that nobody’s asked her yet, and I know if I wait I’m gonna wind up missing out and feeling like a dick. How can I get through asking her without looking like a jerk? Anxious in Cedarhurst.

The best thing, is that you know what’s wrong, and you’re looking for a way to confront it. Think about it, just like Kinga (12/00) you know a girl who doesn’t have a date, and wants to be asked. And believe me, every girl wants to be asked to the prom, so she’s probably just as anxious as you are. Since just being around her makes you nervous, try approaching her when you’re hanging out with a supportive friend. Let him know the deal, so he’ll know when to vamoose. If your would-be prom date is with a friend of her own, conversation in a group is always easier than one-on-one. Let your buddy -and don’t be afraid to use a female friend, or even your sister if you have one- get her friend talking about something, and just casually bring up the prom. Once you break the ice, you have the perfect in. Girls will talk about the prom and their plans -if they have any- non-stop. If you see her clamming up, you know that she’s uncomfortable, so you’ll be on equal footing. From there, asking her out will probably be a relief. For both of you. Don’t worry about it, and write me back after the prom and let me know how you two, lovebirds, did.
