It was the best of times, it was the worst of times (part two)The opening sentence of A Tale of Two Cities, by Charles Dickens (referring to the time of the French Revolution) can be applied to our Thanksgiving holidays of 2003. Looking at the worst of times, though we had a wonderful holiday with family and friends, we had a couple of brushes with tragedy. The worst of timesThis is the car that hit the truck that hit Sue Wednesday morning Ken and I went out for breakfast together and did some other small stuff. Sue got off work around 3 and left to come home to join us. At the end of our street is an awful intersection and Sue was stopped there, waiting to make a left turn onto our street. A big pickup was apparently stopped waiting for her to turn when the truck was plowed into by a car doing what one person estimated to be 40mph at impact. The car was a high speed muscle car reportedly driven by a 16-year-old. There was an estimated 90 feet of rubber on the road from the point the driver of the car locked up his breaks to the point the car hit the truck. A rescue worker estimated the driver of the car was doing over 100 before he hit the brakes in the 40 mph zone.
I was home when I got a call from Sue saying she was hit and hurt. Just like in 1991, I raced to the scene of the accident not knowing what to expect. We took Sue to the emergency room after the accident. Sue had a minor case of whiplash and is doing great, all things considered. The driver of the truck was taken to the hospital in an ambulance. The driver and a passenger in the car were unscathed even though their hot rod car was totaled. They walked away uninjured. First estimates of damage to our car is $5000. My sister LuraTwo weeks ago my sister had a nasty fall on the steps leading into her garage. Late last week she went to her doctor today for a checkup on her leg. He took one look, and sent her immediately to Sacred Heart Medical Center, in Spokane where she lives. According to my other sister, Lura's leg looked "pretty horrifying." There was serious concern she might lose her leg! She is doing better now and may be allowed to return home. Her blood flow in the leg is better. That is a major relief. After he returned to Washington, Steve Jr. went to Spokane to help my sister our other relatives there.
