In the bag

Close, but no cigar
Clutched in the head: This funk-a-delic handbag is a flagrant rip-off of a design I spied on the Internet and coveted for myself (anyone know where?). For that reason, I won't post instructions (not that any of you would want this beta version, anyway). Suffice it to say, this little number was knit from some interesting hand-spun, hand-dyed yarn by Walsenburg, Colo. fiber artist Sheila Ewert-Munger. Her business, High Mountain Meadows (719-738-6001), offers a dizzying rainbow of worsteds that felt rather nicely, don't you think? I'm nuts about how the yarn "zebraed" in brown and purple stripes. I'll continue to work on my little clutches; next time, quicker decreases for a wider, shallower bag, less "handle" and a narrower opening. I might also move to a commercial yarn to get crisper angles. And, yes, I'll count the number of single crochet's with which I edge each opening. You'd think I'd learn.
Also, I'm wondering how to get a smoother "felt." Knit on larger needles? Hotter water? More agitation? Any experts out there?
Daily rant: Big Brother is watching your classroom. Colorado State Sen. John Andrews is drafting an "Academic Bill of Rights" to "encourage" or "require" state colleges and universities to hire conservative faculty and invite guest conservatives to speak. The idea is to balance the liberal idealogues lurking in the Academy. Perhaps faculty lean toward the left for a reason. Could it be they're smarter and better educated?
I knew I went to private school for a reason.
