I hope you’ll all take a look at the article I wrote for InfoWorld this week, not just because it’s a rare appearance for me back in those pages I used to inhabit, but because it’s a topic I think you’ll agree is important.

As we’ve discussed here before, an increasingly frequently practice by hardware manufacturers is to claim you must re-license their proprietary software when you buy their equipment used on the Internet or in the gray market. Cisco has been the most aggressive company in this respect, but it’s now common with others in the high-end router market as well as manufactures in the data storage and telephony sectors. And the consequences could ultimately be felt not just by those who like to get a good deal on eBay, but by corporations who assume they have the unfettered right to sell their corporate assets.

In particular, let me know if you’ve run into any instances of manufacturers trying to enforce such transfer restrictions against you. The only way we can fight for customer rights on this issue is by continuing to bring it to light.
