While Intuit programs have had pop-up ads since the dawn of time, apparently the company has now decided to claim some permanent display space for self-promotion. A reader writes:

I just upgraded to QuickBooks Pro 2003. The program works OK, but, at the bottom of all the check windows, etc., there is a line of advertisement related to one or another QuickBooks product. There is NO WAY turn it off. I've run Ad-Aware, etc., and found no actual spy-bot program, so it must be built into the program. I am spitting out teeth! How dare they think they own my machine and think that, for a product I PAY for, they can shove ads down my throat?

On sample screenshots the reader sent me, the ads are fairly unobtrusive. They’re just one line of text, promoting things like the QuickBooks payroll service or paid tech support. Knowing Intuit as we do, though, it probably won’t be long before this little foothold at the bottom of the page begins to expand. What will be particularly galling for long-time QuickBooks customers is that Intuit is taking this space to advertise “services” that used to be free.
