Yesterday's ComputerWorld article, On-the-Fly IT for Workplace Flexibility, by Julia King reveals some interesting facts, for example:
- the average occupancy rate of commercial office space from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. is between 30% and 50% (No, it's not just at your office after all!)
- Cigna found cost savings of $1500 per worker in the first year of its agile workplace program, and $3000 per worker in its second. (Makes sense it would grow - you'd want to hold on to extra real estate until you got more comfortable with the new ways. I wonder what the third year savings will be!)
- Procter & Gamble Co., a pioneer in business- and worker-agility programs, defines the workplace as "anywhere someone is trying to be productive" (So go ahead and count that time spent in the orthodontist's waiting room with your kids, while you were answering voicemails!)
"Overall, MIT and Gartner researchers estimate that through 2006, agile-workplace strategies will reduce workplace and IT infrastructure costs by 10% to 15%. But for IT, helping to create and support an agile workplace isn't just about setting up workers with laptop computers and at-home broadband network access. It requires a high level of cross-functional collaboration, navigating tricky company politics and fitting new technologies to employees' work patterns."
