Well, I'm a few days behind. There were several highlights from last week.
Don Box and Chris Sells
Meeting Don Box and Chris Sells again. On Wednesday night, Don and Chris were riding to our Whidbey night time event at the Rock Bottom Brewery. What a bunch of IQ in one vehicle!
While with my previous employer, I was able to attend a class on DCOM at DevelopMentor (around 1996) taught by Don Box. The class was a real eye opener, and had an impact on the software that we were building.
Not too long after that, we were fortunate enough to have Chris Sells come to Memphis and teach us how to develop COM objects with ATL. This was right before the release of VB5 and ATL. Before Chris had left, we were able to control a VCR across a LAN. That foundation became a Windows-based control system used in class rooms across the state of Michigan. That software is still in use today.
Doug Boling
Doug attended the Whidbey SDR event. I also saw him on Friday morning at the Whidbey Compact Framework event. If you want to know the inside of Windows CE, you have to read Doug's book, Programming Microsoft Windows CE .NET. In its 3rd edition, this is a must read. It now includes Pocket PC, SmartPhone, SMS, GAPI, and even a chapter on the Compact Framework. Doug signed my newly purchased copy last week. He said in his signing, "Happy Hacking!".
.NET Compact Framework
Last Friday, I heard presentations from the .NET Compact Framework teams on the planning for Whidbey. It is good stuff, and the .NET CF experience appears to be getting even better.
New Postings
After reading others' useless rambling, I plan on adding more technical thoughts into the blog so that we will all learn from each other. Let me know if there is something that I can address for you. You can always email me directly at jbox@quilogy.com.
Until next time...
