Rebecca's Blog
Mostly news stories or articles of interest in the future to me. I'll eventually get around to adding my own ideas and stories on a more regular basis.

For Dallas.

On the vine
I'm opening the doors today on a new project -- something I'm doing on the side, not affiliated with Salon -- called Storyvine. It's a themed blog, focusing on digital storytelling -- the description is "the digital storytelling grapevine." Here's the mission statement: "I've got two goals for this blog: First, by providing timely news and links I hope to provide a useful service to the existing community that has formed around the idea of digital storytelling over the last decade or so, since the first Digital Storytelling Festival in Crested Butte, Colorado, in 1995. Second, I hope to help people who are curious about this phenomenon get a clearer handle on what it is, and where to find out more." I intend to update it as regularly as there's news, information, links or thoughts that are of interest to the people who are interested in this subject. Come visit. Dave had this to say:
"Only steal from the best" is a motto I have stolen from some great writer whose name I don't know. It illustrates an important difference between writing and programming. In programming we tend to reinvent what others have invented, or even worse, patent things that other people have invented.

I have a different programming ethic. I look for programs written by other people that can inspire me. When I see a neat idea or a well-done effect, I remember it, and then when I see the problem show up in my own software, I use it. I contribute a lot back, in the way of new ideas, so this seems very ethical to me.

---------------------------------

Don't we do this with everything? Only some people steal and contribute nothing back.  I'm going to start contributing...and not just by trying to make people feel good.  :)
