Rebecca's Blog
Mostly news stories or articles of interest in the future to me. I'll eventually get around to adding my own ideas and stories on a more regular basis.

I use EDiets to remember to focus on my weight and have people to talk to about it.  One of the ladies I've been "chatting" with for about a year is in the Ukraine with a ministry (her husband is a presbyterian preacher, i believe).  Here's an excerpt from today's post:

Twice this week I went to the Children’s Camp which is located in the town of Skadovsk (get out your Ukrainian maps and look south of Kherson on the edge of the Black Sea – (another smile) ). It was good to see the kids and the staff. Lots of hugging and smiles all around. There is a little concern whenever it is hugging one of the street kids due to TB. And then we were told that 3 of the young girls have syphilis, but they are not there. Oh my. It breaks your heart into pieces. They prostitute themselves to get money for bread to eat and glue to sniff, some as young as 5 or 6. Sometimes I can’t stand man’s inhumanity to man, especially when it involves children.

However, I also went to the abandoned babies hospital this week and played with 3 little almost toddlers. Had 3 other American women with me and it was great. Took a blanket and we sat on the “lawn,” got out the toys I always bring and let them play. It’s tiring in a way – their future is always on my mind, so I pray for them a lot, too. But they have hope for a future – adoption or placement in an orphanage where they will have a semblance of normal life.

Sometimes it's odd to think about how different the same species of humans can be in one day.  About how many people are worried about who said what about who or how to afford a new outfit or even if we're going to have enough money to retire in 40 years....when around the world there's babies starving and little children prostituting their lives.  Is there a way to even it out?  Would people want to?

Last night I read Ayn Rand, “Anthem,” focusing on the Ego and I'm not so sure.  It shows how maybe equality is not what’s desired.  Is it okay for all men to be even…and is that even possible?  Even in the controlled society where everyone had food to eat and a place to sleep, the duties that controlled their days were ranked and selected by man.  The fact that there are leaders means things aren’t equal.  Man making decisions is always a flawed process due to our emotions.  I sure wouldn’t want that.  The ability to excel is the focus of my existence.  To be the smartest or the funniest or the cutest or the most successful…anything to be above the average person encourages me to try harder.

Ayn Rand defined her philosophy as: “My philosophy, in essence, is the concept of man and a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reasons as his only absolute.”

Well, that’s just silly in a lot of ways.  People do things for others without their own happiness.  I pickup trash from a park and ride I don’t use every other month.  I get no benefit or thank you from this.  Some would argue that I get the satisfaction that the world is a cleaner place, but I’m not sure that’s true since I know it would get cleaned without me.  Lots of examples like that.

But, the question is – why am I here focusing on Rebecca and not taking care of babies around the world?  Would it make the world a better place?  Would it go further than helping some technology that can benefit those babies 50 years from now?
