Things are getting out of hand...
I have written previously about the situation on the halls of the school and the class cutting epidemic. Well, many of the cutters have a habit of going into the room of the teacher across the hall from me and causing problems there. Today that teacher had a sub (can you smell trouble?). Well, you may know that how students behave for a particular teacher will determine how they behave for a sub in that class--amplified exponentially. Well this morning, the substitute came over to my room to ask for my assistance because some of the students were about to fight. Well, I came over, and surprisingly, was successful in running some kids out of the room who didn't belong there. Then had to stand out in the hallway for a while to prevent them from returning. They tried several times. Things were stilll bad in the room, and so I called down to the assistant principal's office to ask for an administrator to come down. Fifteen minutes later, no one had come, and all chaos broke loose. Two male student were fighting with two female students. The students were throwing chairs across the room at each other, one of which I had to strike down with my forearm when it came flying in my direction. The boy was grabbing one girl by her hair extentions, and throwing her down on the floor, against a wall, and bashing her head on a table. By the time help finally did arrive, the involved parties had, well, departed, and the bell had rung so no one was left. It will take some time to identify the perpetrators and get some discipline done. Anyway, my arm is fine. Nothing but a minor bruise....The physical risks of teaching in the inner-city. (When you consider that the suburban alternative might be getting shot up by semi-automatic weapons, it doesn't sound so bad.)
