Urban Educ8r: A Wickerblog
This weblog is dedicated primarily to the discussion of Education issues and policies, as well as to chronicling the author's experiences as an inner-city school teacher. These days, the education discussion is too much in the hands of ignorant politicians merely doing what they need to gain re-election, and not enough in the hands of knowledgable professionals with first hand experience.

Today the entire fleet of the Atlanta Public Schools workforce gathered at Phillips Arena for the Annual Superintendents' Convocation, better named the Superintendents' Colossal Waste of Time. Schools who met their annual "targets" in performance and attendance were recognized and their staffs will receive bonus checks. I will get $1000 for being on one of those staffs.

Among the many speakers, Board of Education President Emmett Johnson assured teachers how "appreciated" we are, emphasizing how the students know, when they come in the classroom, that their teachers are there not for money, but because they really care about them. How nice of him to tell us that. Of course, it is obviously true. But coming from the president of the Board, is there a subtle agenda in the message? Like, if you ask for higher (deserved) salaries, you must be just in it for the money. Funny how the same ethical standard is not placed on professional athletes.

More on the fun side, I got the chance to roam around and check out some of the posh, club-level ammenities at the arena, which I as a teacher would never be able to partake in (as if I wanted to). Ah, how the other half lives. I'm not complaining. Just pointing out ironic truths.
