Ok, I've gotten a clarification as well as more details about the finger incedent. It was not done with a knife. I must have assumed that when my colleague told me that a student had "cut off" part of the teacher's finger, and I knew that the teacher involved was a science teacher. What actually happened was that the student, and yes, reportedly it was done deliberately, slammed the classroom door onto the teacher's hand, severing the tip of his finger.
And here's the kicker: As the student was being handcuffed and escorted out of the school, he says to the assistant principal, "when I come back, can I get my schedule changed?"
(Son, your schedule is going to change a little more drastically than you think. Jumpsuit. Three square meals. Lights out at ten...)
I also learned that the surgeon was unable to re-attach the detached portion of the finger, and had to even cut the finger down farther to stitch it up. Sorry for the graphic description, but...you understand. Can you imagine?
