Urban Educ8r: A Wickerblog
This weblog is dedicated primarily to the discussion of Education issues and policies, as well as to chronicling the author's experiences as an inner-city school teacher. These days, the education discussion is too much in the hands of ignorant politicians merely doing what they need to gain re-election, and not enough in the hands of knowledgable professionals with first hand experience.

Word is that the student responsible for the finger incedent is back in school. Not sure if he was even suspended.

Had a "hall sweep" today at the school. That's when tardy students are locked out of rooms and herded out of the halls to a central location. Dozens of students were caught and given one day suspensions. Several students were resolute in their determination to protect their right to be on the hall. They refused to move, even at the behest of an administrator.

Obviously, the presence of masses of students on the halls during class remains a steady problem. Today I don't know how many kids peeped into the classroom, or knocked on the door and ran, or simply loitered in front of the bathrooms (you know that's where I would want to hang out if I were cutting class all day) returning looks of disdain if you so much as acknowledged their presence. They're so tough.

Let me be clear. There are students who spend the entire school day in the school buiding, but do not attend class. We're not losing these kids. We've lost them. The question is, how many can we redeem?
