I was heartened when I first read that a bipartisan majority of our County Commissioners had requested two budget scenarios other than one County Mangager Willie Best had inititally developed. The two requested budgets would respectively cut spending by 5% and 10%. I just think that every once in a while it is a healthy exercise for taxpayer funded agencies to show us what services would go away if they don't have the money to pay for them.
But today it is reported by the N&R that the chair of our County Commission calls such introspection "... a serious disservice to the community".
Chairman Bruce Davis would do a serious service to the community by putting a sock in it. He is apparently outraged that a majority of the Commissioners would have the audacity to ask to see if there is any fat that we can live without in any of the 27 departments we support with our tax dollars.
I assume we elected him and the other 10 Commissioners to be good stewards of our money and that is exactly what a majority of them are looking to do. Being such a famously divided elected body, I am quite pleased that Democrats and Republicans have decided to work together towards that end.
Lets see what the cuts would look like. If they are too "bloody" for the taxpayers to stomach then the Commissioners can go with Manager Best's original budget that calls for a hefty tax increase. But thanks to a majority of the Commissioners, at least we will have had a chance to see a lower cost alternative.
