It is interesting, this blogging thing, and the times are changing fast.
Friend Dave Beckwith of Charlotte (aka Anonymoses) emailed me today to join an enterprise called Carolina Blog Consultants. Now I haven't yet called or otherwise responded to Dave, but I think I get the gist of what he is trying to get going. Apparently he is attempting to assemble a bunch of experienced webloggers to offer themselves up as hired guns for any entity who is just now figuring out that blogs will soon become a necessity of Web life.
Will I join up? I dunno yet. I need another job like Jinni and I need more medical bills. But this I do know, if I do join Nonny's enterprise I will be considered an enemy of everyone who is currently known as "The Mill team". How do I know... because of this post over at Michael's Corner. (Interesting comments, too.)
From what I can discern, the peace pipe will not be passed at a future combined meeting of the Mill folk and the Meetup folk... and why is that? Well it seems that the Mill folk believe that Beckwith and Co., "... have used information from a prior post-meetup mill meeting to create their own enterprise which is in direct competition to their business".
So I suppose if this is indeed true, we now know what the "Mill team" has been working on for all this time: a consulting business. But I have to say, IF both entities are involved in the same enterprise, and IF I decide to sign on to such consulting work, I would be inclined to go with Beckwith mainly for one reason - transparency.
Beckwith is doing it in the open... no secrets, no conspiracy allegations, no bull, no side choosing. He is inviting people to his party and laying it all out without need for a non-disclosure/non-compete contract. He understands that successful weblogging is all about the quality of the content. It is not about who can provide the most hyperlinks in a post or copy/paste the most non-original material into their blogs. He also understands that the first rules of the craft are openness, inclusiveness, and total transparency.
