Today's UNC vs Kentucky matchup elicits loyalty paralysis in this North Carolina transplanted Kentuckian.  I s'pose this year I'll have to be pulling for Big Blue.

Shoe on other foot update: While Grimsley students, players and fans were jubilant yesterday... Crest H.S. was a different scene according to the Shelby Star.

"...Crest High Principal Roger Harris announced over the intercom the school had to forfeit Friday's game. Students started to sob and curse, while others stared off in silence.    ..."Tears just started falling off my face," student LaToya Ross said. "I have a cousin and a friend on the football team. They're disappointed. We're disappointed. We were going to win tonight."...

Also... Lots of chatter about the Crest H.S. ineligibility situation and possible ramifications at NCPreps.com message board.  Opening thread here, then here and here

Getting to the state championship game is one thing... winning it is quite another.  Now that the elation of Grimsley's strange and historic (N&R) advancement to the 4-A title game is waning, Jack and his teammates find a monster guarding their path to making Whirlie football history, J.H. Rose High School (Greenville Reflector).  The Rampants (and you thought 'Whirlies' was a weird name) will be playing for their third straight state 4-A title.

They utterly destroyed Lee County last night 56-0 in their semi-final game in the East Region bracket.  Nothing new about that, the Greenville team been shamelessly running up scores on their opponents all year.  Scores such as 78-0 against Washington, 75-0 against South Central and 76-6 vs W. Carteret.  All told they have outscored their opponents 770-135 on their way to a 15-0 season.

When you compare just that one statistic to Grimsley's 343-135 point differential during this 14-1 season, you can see why GHS's Coach Shuping might have some sleepless nights this week... Rose is a scoring machine.

But Grimsley has a defense that is up to the task.  Looking at the defensive side of the two school's 'points for/points against' stats and we find that Grimsley has allowed the same amount of points (edited) as the Rose team.

The Whirlies defense has been uncanny all year in stopping both the pass and the run, and I'm confident that they will do the same this Saturday in the championship game.  The bigger they are...
