I like this.
I was checking the Drudge Report and was very surprised to see a local, in-rotation, ad at the top of the page for local realtor Carol Ferrell (whom, BTW, I have never heard of before). I clicked on the ad and was taken to Homes of the Triad website. The site is quite informative, but one thing caught my eye.
She has dedicated an entire section of her site to what you would think is the bain of every realtor's existence: 'For Sale by Owner Resources'. When you go there, she gives helpful advice on how to sell your home on your own and provides a sample sales flyer for the do-it-yourselfer among other resources. There is even a link to an 'Offer to Purchase' (PDF) document in case you luck-up and meet with success in getting someone to make an offer on your home. The reason I like Ferrell's approach so much is that it goes against 'common wisdom, and her thinking mirrors a portion of my own business plan when it comes to fixing historic windows.
Many times, when I present my estimate on the cost of restoring a bunch of windows in a home, the owner will cringe a bit at the total - cause I ain't cheap. My normal course in such situations is to offer to fix just one of the units with the owner's help and teach him/her how to go about the process for the balance of the house.
Every time (except one) I have done this, the owner hires me to do the work once they discover the time and expertise involved. I suspect that many of Ferrell's 'For Sale By Owner' visitors do the same and ultimately hire her to sell their homes. Brilliant.
