Last night during Grimsley's bonfire, I walked down the hill to use the field house's facilities. As I was leaving I looked over to the adjacent, fully lit and yard-lined playing field at Jamieson Stadium - the largest preps stadium in the state. The place was empty save for one person; in the middle of the field was a good sized kid throwing a football - and throwing it long and hard - to no one but himself.
With the sounds of cheers, drums and general exuberance spilling into the stadium out of sight of this solo performance, I watched the kid throw the ball... and then walk, head down and slowly, over to where it landed. He'd pick it up and then throw it again, hard, toward the other end zone. It was obvious to me that this guy was missing more than the bonfire.
Although I couldn't get a good fix on the boys face - it looked a lot like the kid who brought the Whirlies to where they're going today: injured Grimsley quarterback Josh Stewart. Josh, along with his dad Aaron, are profiled in today's N&R.
