Things to argue about

Just found this post, Things My Girlfriend and I Have Argued About (thanks to Laughing~Knees for linking to it). It's a scream.

One wish granted

You know, sometimes your wishes get granted in the most unexpected ways. I need firewood and don't have the money right now to buy a half a cord. I don't even use that much. So I kind of put it out to the universe that I need firewood. I figured I could get a few logs from friends' woodpiles here and there. Then this morning I heard voices out back. There's a dead tree that's been hanging out over my deck for the past couple of years. Today they came to cut it down. I asked if I could have the wood and the guy said no problem - he'll cut it into pieces and if I want it I can go down and bring it up and use it. Woo-hoo!

Dave Pollard's "Save the World" Roadmap

Last night I posted about wanting to see examples of hope to offer an antidote to feelings of anger and disempowerment. Dave Pollard has been thinking a lot about How to Save the World (the name of his blog) and he has posted his own very detailed roadmap. I don't agree with everything he listed and I have to say I am extremely distrustful of utopian visions because not everyone has the same idea of utopia. One person's utopia is another person's nightmare.  However, it's an interesting set of actions. And in keeping with my point about hope, he lists the following step "S9 / Smash Despair, Cynism & Complacency":

We must believe the creation of a vastly better world is possible. That means heeding the words of relentless optimists like Margaret Mead and relentless change architects like Bucky Fuller. We can't give up hope, and we can't give up trying.
