The Snowflake: Winter's Secret Beauty

Just found a note about this book, The Snowflake: Winter's Secret Beauty, in the Boston Globe. The authors have a web site full of information on snowflakes and snow crystals, the physics of snowflakes, activities, and "snowflake touring"!

SWF over 40 seeks fresh new video

A few weeks ago there was an article in the NY Times, “Just Saying No to the Dating Industry.” Several “longtime combatants in the dating wars” talked about deciding to either take a sabbatical or just leave it all up to chance. Personally, I’ve found internet dating to be just about the only way I can meet anyone because I work at home and I’m over 40 and don’t hang out with lots of single people. But it can test your emotional fortitude and it’s easy to get jaded. At that point a sabbatical to just live one’s life – see friends and pursue one’s passions – is a good idea.

This morning I read Cary Tennis’ column at salon.com (by subscription) in which he responds to a very young woman’s “I didn’t hear back from him what does that mean?” dilemma with the following:

When one is young, one's heart is new and full of unexplored, unlabeled spaces; searching one's heart may therefore be a baffling, overwhelming experience, like walking into Le Video in San Francisco. There are too many videos for one human being. Each one of those videos is a whole experience, and you can't possibly see them all, or even a fraction of them. The heart is like that: You search it but you can't recognize much because everything is new.

Then you get to be, say, 37, and it's different. Your collection is almost completely labeled and alphabetized. Then you have a different problem when searching your heart: You are hard-pressed to find any titles you haven't seen a few times already.

Unfortunately I recognize that problem. Dating can stop feeling like a fun way to meet new people with that possibility of romance dancing in the background and turn into a purgatory of repetitive motions - same questions, same answers, same story. Then it’s good to drop out for awhile. As for all those video titles, I’ve always gone for the offbeat independent or foreign ones that bring something unexpected into my world. Why should romance be any different?
