Dark chocolate vortex

When PMS strikes in the frozen foods aisle...

The weekend

Over the course of an hour yesterday afternoon the seasons reversed from summer back to early spring again. I went for a walk around 2 pm wearing shorts and a tank top. By 5 pm when my guest arrived with the fish to grill, the temps had dropped to low 60’s and I’d changed for the third time into progressively warmer clothes. But the rain held off until after dark, so we had plenty of time to grill out on the deck, though we wisely chose to eat indoors.

We found an Indian Ginger Masala marinade in my fish cookbook to marinate the halibut steak and it was very tasty along with grilled veggies and the bean salad. He also brought peaches, but I’d prepared a surprise for dessert – fresh strawberry shortcakes with cream (made this recipe, only without the mint and with a handful of blueberries thrown in. This morning I made good use of one of the left-behind peaches along with some blueberries folded into my pancakes, my absolute favorite combination.

Today it’s in the mid 50’s and cloudy. It rained this morning and there are puddles of water in the seats of my patio chairs. I see I left my fish grilling basket and long-handled spatula out on the grill shelf. More rain and chilly weather are predicted until Friday, which should be the start of another nice weekend. Great weather pattern, unless of course you have weekdays off!

(Does this look like Mystery Science Theater?)

Saturday night I went to see “Good Bye Lenin!” with some friends. It’s about young East German man, Alex, who tends to his mother, an avid socialist who had a heart attack and fell into a coma just before the fall of the Berlin Wall. When she wakes up, the doctors fear her heart is too weak to withstand the shock of finding out how much the world has changed. So Alex goes about trying to restore the past in their little apartment, including refilling old socialist-era pickle jars that aren’t sold anymore and so on. The well-intentioned scam becomes harder to keep up, requiring more elaborate ruses. It’s often very funny and at other times quite touching. We all enjoyed it.

Sunday night my housemate Kathy and I watched “Don Juan de Marco” with Johnny Depp and Marlon Brando on some cable station I’m now getting. What a wonderful movie! Kathy hadn’t seen it before, and I hadn’t since it came out almost 10 years ago. Funny, enchanting and romantic.

Other than that, I watched some baseball, read my book (Middlesex), went for walks and tried to do some writing. Now I am back to waiting for work. I have a meeting Thursday on one project, so I will at least have that. Still waiting to hear on the big summer-long gig. Keeping my fingers crossed.
