Dogs. So much of life spent in that reverent position. And smart, too.

Sad day

Tough day today. This afternoon, my housemate's old boxer, Miles, is going to doggy heaven. A veterinarian friend of mine is coming out to the house, so that will make things much easier emotionally. It's hard to pack a dog into the car and take him or her off to some sterile vet clinic for that. I had to do it with one of my dogs a few years ago. She was anemic and after a couple of (costly) stays in the animal hospital that didn't cure her, she was just going downhill, so I had to take her to be put to sleep. I stayed with her through it, felt it was the least I could do, but it was very hard, as was all the anticipation beforehand. Afterwards I did grieve her loss, but it was actually easier than the anxiety of worrying through her couple months of illness. And I still had another dog to care for (and she made things easier by dying peacefully at home - a gem to the end, that one).

Kathy, my housemate, will also have another dog still to care for, which should make things easier. And she'll be traveling cross country in about a week and be gone for the summer - nothing to remind her of him. But now we are in anticipation mode and it's tough. She just called me from the road - she'd taken Miles for a ride in the car, fed him some raw steak!, and they were having a good day together. It's gorgeous - sunny and dry, 70 degrees, perfect. There's champagne chilling in the frig and we'll toast to him later. Now if I could only get that Simon and Garfunkle song, "The Boxer," out of my head - too sad.
