The People's Radio

The Independent: "Podcasting delivers radio-like sound files via RSS (the "web syndication" system that many websites now offer) for downloading onto MP3 players like Apple's iPod that have plenty of room for audio files.

The sheer simplicity and potential of the idea have created quite a buzz."

Radio UserLand: Radio as a Manila directory editing tool

Radio as a directory editor is also interesting because it makes it easy to edit an entire website in a single window, not just the organization of the pages, but the content of the pages as well.

Blog-Safe Links zu Abo-Sites

Years ago, Dave Winer helped negotiate a system that allows bloggers to link to the full-text of New York Times articles and have those links work even after the article has been pulled back within the NYT's archives. Now...

Radio UserLand: How to use Radio with Manila

When you save a Radio outline to a Manila server, it's "rendered" according to rules that may appear in the outline. If no rules appear the text is assumed to be pure HTML, no formatting is applied. In practice, most Manila-bound outlines use Rules; writing in pure HTML can be inconvenient and low-level.

Macros: opmlBlogroll

Renders an OPML document as a set of blogroll links.

How to call it

{opmlBlogroll (opmlUrl, flProcessMacros:true, cssPrefix:"blogroll", recentlyUpdatedLinkPrefix:"", recentlyUpdatedLinkSuffix:"")}
url is a string, the URL of an OPML document.
All of the remaining parameters are optional.
flProcessMacros is a boolean specifying whether or not to process macros when rendering the blogroll. Default is false.
cssPrefix is a string specifying a prefix for the CSS class attributes in the rendered blogroll.
recentlyUpdatedPrefix and recentlyUpdatedSuffix are strings which are pre-pended or appended to the blogroll link if the outline element has an isRecent attribute whose value is "true".

Example

{opmlBlogroll ("http://macros.userland.com/discuss/reader$69.opml")}

Media & Journalism Grab Bag, Dec. 7

Here are some more items about news, media, and journalism that have caught my interest recently. TOP OF THIS LIST: BBC bamboozled by spoof site. On Dec. 3, the venerable TV news show "BBC World" broadcast an interview with Jude Finisterra, who claimed to be a spokesperson for Dow Chemical. In the interview, Finisterra offered a $12 billion (US) settlement to the 120,000 surviving victims of the Bhopal disaster. Trouble is, Finisterra is a hoaxster... (Read the rest of this list...)

New Features Prototypes

I’ve just posted two prototype HTML pages for some forthcoming IT Conversations features and I’m looking for feedback. (Add a comment here or send email to doug@rds.com.)

The first is a Personal Profile editing page. It should be self explanatory.

The second page is to manage a Personal Podcast/RSS Feed. This one should be self explanatory, but that’s where I need your help. In case it’s not obvious, the idea is that each registered IT Conversations member will have the ability to manage his/her own RSS feed by selecting which programs should be included based on a variety of criteria. The motivation for this feature is that new listeners in particular are put off by the quantity and variety of programs and need help sifting through the archives. Likewise, podcatchers want a way to control what gets automatically downloaded into their MP3 players.

Remember, these are just prototype pages. They don’t do anything, the links are bogus and the supporting JavaScript automation hasn’t been coded.

As we’re still discussing on the wiki, it’s possible that these new features may only be available to members who pay an annual fee. But it’s my hope that there will be no tollgate impeding access to the programs themselves.
