Getting Unstuck
The June 2004 issue of Fast Company magazine, http://www.fastcompany.com, has a review of a new book by Keith Yamashita and Sandra Spataro called "Unstuck." In the book, the authors identify the "Serious Seven" states of unstuck. Find your project is hitting the wall? Maybe you need the antidote for one of these:
1. Overwhelmed
Too much going on, not enough people or time.
2. Exhausted
Your team is paralyzed, burned out.
3. Directionless
No big picture; action but no results.
4. Hopeless
The passion is gone; the team lacks purpose.
5. Battle-torn
Your team is at war.
6. Worthless
Poor metrics make measuring success impossible.
7. Alone
Your team isn't in sync.
[Gary's comments] The first step whenever you sense something is wrong with a team or a project is to mentally step back and cooly look at the situation being sensitive to each person and the relationships and interactions. Then use an analysis tool like these seven states. Identify what's wrong, then you can proceed to take positive steps to move things back into the right direction.
