In Search of a Single Version of Truth
What person educated in both engineering and philosophy wouldn't be intrigued by this headline? I just received a notice of the release of a report by The Data Warehousing Institute (TDWI) with that title. Actually the "truth" that is the subject of this report deals with which business or manufacturing data is correct.
What if you had multiple servers either for different functions or applications? Perhaps information from a controller in the process automation sends information through different routes to the different servers. What if one server updated each half-hour and one updated twice a day? Which server contains the "truth?"
Research by the Institute indicates that few organizations have fully consolidated information from their various "analytic silos." Activity is ramping up for consolidation and return on investment is high for those who succeed, according to the report.
Research shows that the most prevalent driver of consolidation is the need for consistent data across the enterprise. The average ROI for consolidation projects is $3.34 million with an average payback period of 2.1 years.
The report was authored by Wayne Eckerson, director of research at TDWI. Check out http://www.dw-institute.com.
Then think about where all your data is stored and how many versions of the truth you have.
