Wireless Sensor Networks Hit Big Time

Here's an article in the New York Times about wireless sensor networks. I've been writing about the applications of this technology in industrial automation for some time now. Many of these networks use something called "mesh" networking, a self-organizing, self-adaptable network technology. Others can use WiFi or even cellular phone bands.

Engineers who are gaining expertise with this technology should check out articles like these and look for process control opportunities beyond the walls (or fences) of their process plant. There may be some fantastic opportunities out there. If the NY Times is writing about them, the concept is spreading rapidly.

Wireless Sensor Networks Spread to New Territory. Wireless networks of sensors and machinery have long been used in a handful of critical tasks like air traffic control. Now the technology is expanding. By By BARNABY J. FEDER. [The New York Times > Technology]
