I heard back from Invensys Process Systems about my reporting of the new Immersive Virtual Reality Process. I'm positive I heard one prototype, but they actually have four "major global clients" working with the system and expect to expand that to between 15 to 20 clients within a couple of months. Test cases have included process design, maintenance engineering and plant safety. "We are ready to make proposals and quotes now," according to the statement.

I'm a believer in using these advanced tools--I agreed with Dick Morley when he thought gaming visualization would revolutionize HMI. I do think that once we go beyond the "gee whiz" of the technology, a lot of thought needs to go into the actual implementation--workflow issues, maintaining system current with engineering changes of the plant and equipment, policies and more. We're probing a little deeper and will report more as we get more information.
