Now I am fresh after my vacations and jetlag is over. First let me wish you a very happy and prosperous new year. Now I’m all set to dive down to my regular work and blogging schedule.
Like most bloggers, let me revisit 2004 and what it meant for the industry.
The buzzword of the year was SOA. All software vendors emphasized on Service Oriented Architecture and their vision and support for SOA. Oracle launched BPEL Process Manager after acquiring Collaxa to put forward its vision into reality. Interestingly we missed a Petstore for SOA!
The debate of the year was open sourcing Java. Sun went flip flop on this topic. It does not matter too much whether Java is open sourced or not there is too much open sourced on Java!
The scandal of the year was the anonymous posting by JBoss employees. Anonymity and Internet are kind of two side of the coins but JBoss was singled out because they tried to silence any voices against them. Good thing that JBoss has put this into past and marched ahead.
The topic of discussion of the year was persistence. The discussion for unified persistence, EJB 3.0 vs. JDO dominated all technology discussion forums. It was a year of reawakening for EJB. In spite of all EJB bashing JCP released drafts for EJB 3.0 spec and most developers are eagerly looking for final version of the spec.
