From Slate [posted by Troy] I read Uncle Tom's Cabin as an undergrad somewhere around 1997 or 1998. I just read an interesting article about Uncle Tom in Slate that tries to put the novel in context. Is it truly a great novel? As the article notes: When Lincoln finally met Stowe at the White House, he reportedly twitted her with, "So this is the little lady whose book started the Civil War." This novel was instrumental in spreading anti-slavery thought, but the writing...leaves something to be desired. Yet, many feminist theorists have tried to raise it up as a feminization of the 1850s. Was it? And if so, doesn't that make it a great work? Ok, so read the slate article, or better yet, read Uncle Tom.
