Learning to Write [posted by Troy] Some of you may know of Stanley Fish. Those of us in Higher Education certainly know of him. He used to be at the University of Illinois at Chicago and is known as an outspoken educator. It seems that he is always turning up to tell higher education how to correct itself. In today's NY Times, Dr. Fish describes why students don't know how to write and suggests ways to fix it. Naturally, Fish doesn't offer any statistically significant data to justify his claims but they are interesting. He also doesn't discuss how this might work at the poorest of the poor schools. But, these are just side notes.
