Hoffman [posted by Troy] Last night, I caught the very end of hte All Star game, which, as it turns out, was all I needed to see. Trevor Hoffman came in in the 9th inning with a save opportunity. He blew it. This got me thinking about an email that I had reveived from Craig about the definition of a save. Here it is:According to Rule 10.20, a pitcher gets credit for a save when (1) he is the finishing pitcher in a game won by his club, and (2) he is not the winning pitcher, and (3) he qualifies under the following conditions: (a) he enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning, or (b) he enters the game with the potential tying run either on base, at bat, or on deck, or (c) he pitches effectively for at least three innings. When a relief pitcher enters a game in a save situation and departs, or the game ends with the save situation no longer in effect because he has given up the lead, he is charged with a blown save. If the save opportunity still exists when he leaves the game, he is not charged with a save opportunity.

Chad vs. Josh [posted by Troy] And the war rages on! Josh versus Chad! Just in the past week Josh has hit Tennessee, Virginia, Georgia (I think), and some others. Chad drove across the country and picked up Iowa, tried and failed at Illinois, and I think in some others. In case you don't remember this bet, check out this post from july 11, 2005. I have some newly updated climbing totals. I want to emphasize that these are rough totals and that the photographic evidence of the high point ascents have not been reviewed. Here they are:Chad: 94,000 feet above sea leve (14 States) Josh: 145,000 feet above sea level (27 States) Well sports fans, the bet continues!
