Strange Dreams
I have been having some pretty vivid dreams lately. I used to be very good about writing them all down, but have gotten out of the habit of late. I should start again. This morning, I was woken up by the sound of the telephone ringing, just once. Thing is, the phone was unplugged, so it must have been a dream. But it was so real!

Nick the Shaman
I promised a story about being a wife. I've puzzled and puzzled about a good one to tell, and I'm coming up a bit empty. This tale isn't really about my role as wife, but it is about something that happened to me as a new bride, so hope it will suffice for now.

Joe worked with an Inuk named Nick. He was a very funny and sweet guy, until he got some alcohol in him. I had seen him in action several months before while on assignment in Nain, Labrador, and it wasn't pretty. He got angry and violent - very scary.

Joe decided to invite Nick over to our house one afternoon. I warned him not to serve booze. Joe however, being the jovial host, decided that offering one or two drinks wouldn't be of any harm. I kept shooting Joe looks, but he was having a grand time with Nick, and my silent warnings went unheeded.

After drink number three, the personality shift happened. Quite suddenly Nick the Shaman joined us. He started moving around the room very slowly, in what could be described as tai chi movements, and chanting. He approached us (we were sitting beside one another on the couch), put a hand on each of our heads, and sang out: "You will always be HAPPY!", all the while shaking our heads to the point they were almost knocking together. He did this several times. Joe and I were at a loss as to what to do. We definitely were not in Kansas any more.

Just as quickly as it had come, the shaman personality left, to be replaced by the one I had seen in Naine. Nick became nasty, physically agressive, and I just knew there was going to be trouble. I was terrified he was going to beat Joe up.

We called a cab and as quickly as possible had Nick wisked away to his home, all the while feeling like shits for having created this situation. Being the young bride, I tried not to rub it in Joe's face, although I think I did. Another of youth's lessons learned at someone else's expense.
