Glorious! Summer has finally found its way to the Yukon. We've had temperatures of 29 degrees both yesterday and today, but with a lovely breeze so it doesn't feel too hot. Yesterday I decided to forego housework and Joe and I drove to a spot about 45 minutes from here to meet some friends for a picnic. On the way we stopped at a little stream where we saw dozens of grayling. However I guess they were spawning because they weren't at all interested in our fishing hooks. Once at the picnic spot, we sat and watched three large ram sheep at the top of one of the mountains that surrounded us. We roasted to perfection smokies on a stick, and along with a salad and some watermelon for dessert, that was supper.
Today was equally glorious, although I have been stuck inside for much of the afternoon, doing the things I put off doing yesterday. However now the house cleaning is mostly done (or as much of it as I'm going to do), a roast and a salad are ready for dinner, and I have time to grab a few minutes with my book out on the deck. Iris has gone off to the beach at Marsh Lake with a girlfriend and will likely be calling soon for a ride home, so I'd best make the most of this lull in activity.
People have asked me why I've stayed in the Yukon all these years, what with me being so far away from my roots. It's true I have from time to time thought about leaving, but when you get days like this, it's hard to imagine living anywhere else. That's in spite of the fact that my dad is not well and the time has come to make some decisions about his care. I will need to go home to take care of business very soon. However for this week-end at least, I am not letting that, or anything else, weigh heavy on my mind.
