I mentioned a few days ago on this blog that my dad isn't well. He had a mild stroke last week (he's had several since the fall apparently), and while he's out of the hospital now he's very tired and his speech is slurred. For the time being he's staying at his girlfriend's house, but decisions need to be made about whether he'll return to his own home and if so what arrangements will be made for his care. It's clear that he can no longer live by himself.
Tonight there's a family meeting. I should be there. Instead, I'm stuck at the other end of the country. I am making arrangements to be on speaker phone, but still....I'm feeling guilty that I'm not there. The house needs to be cleaned, painted, cleared out, etc. and I'm not there to help with the work.
Any other time I would be on a plane in a shot. But there's stuff going on at work that is making it next to impossible to leave right now. And everyone at work has too much on their plate so it's not so easy to just hand my load over to someone else, especially since I'm the only one who knows how to do some of this stuff. Plus I'm leaving for Spain in a couple of weeks. Spain is very important for the sake of my marriage and I'm not willing to cancel it. I will get home later in the summer, but by then most of the hard work will be done. I hope my family will forgive me.
