Market Day It's always a treat to go to a farmers' market. Here in the Yukon, where it's especially challenging to grow crops, such a market is particularly worth supporting and celebrating. Since I've been away a lot this summer I haven't gone very much to our local market, but yesterday I stopped by on my way home from work.
The sight of all those fresh organics immediately got my saliva glands working, but part of the enjoyment for me too is to be able to visit with some pretty interesting folks. There's Jake, the best male soccer player in the Yukon by far (when he played university soccer in the States he was named one of the top ten strikers in the country), but also a farmer who sells delicious baked goods among his stalls of carrots, herbs and greens.
Then there's Brian who raises goats and sells homemade cheese and pesto. Brian is blind. One winter when he was out cross country skiing with a friend, a heavy snowstorm blew up. It was Brian, not his sighted friend, who led the both of them out of the bush and back to his home.
Next is 16-year old Graham, a neighbour of ours until his family moved out to an acreage to raise horses and organic vegetables. Graham made me a tall glass of fresh juice from one apple, one banana and EIGHT carrots. I may never need eyeglasses again!
All in all, it was a very satisfying visit as I left with my baby potatoes, carrots, various greens and a fat loaf of honey oat bread.
