Chicago hosts medical marijuana hearing today

The Windy City continues to be a bastion of debate regarding cannabis law reform. Today, hearings will be held in the city regarding a proposed Illinois law that would allow some medical use of marijuana by people like Julie Falco:

Once or twice every day, Julie Falco breaks the law to relieve her multiple sclerosis symptoms.

Eating illegal marijuana brownies, she says, allows her to stand up straighter and walk more easily.

But Falco worries about getting busted, and she believes the stress can worsen her symptoms. So today she plans to testify in favor of a bill that would legalize the medical use of marijuana in Illinois.

Would Julie be helped by decrim? I suppose a fine is better than arrest, but this is another example of why a regulated system would help everyone, especially those who need it most.

Chicago decrim seeps into other drug war coverage

From the end of a Boston Globe story (they're all over this topic, aren't they?) on the wonderful LEAP organization:

Slowly, however, the number of people who believe the policy needs to be reversed is reaching critical mass. Last week in Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley endorsed a proposal to issue fines for possession of small amounts of marijuana rather than clog the courts with cases that tend to be thrown out by judges.

(Thanks, Pete, for the tip!)
