Decrimwatch on the air in Philadelphia

I've been scheduled as a guest on the Michael Smerconish's WPHT show in Philadelphia to talk about Chicago's decrim plan. I'm set to go on at 8:05 a.m. Eastern Time Friday morning.

No webcast, unfortuanately, but I'll have a report by the afternoon.

Decrim consensus creeps north

Nobody's too scandalized by the decrim proposal in Chicago, and the sentiment continues north of the city.

The race for the U.S.  House seat in the Ninth district, which includes several elite North Shore suburbs, pits popular incumbent Democratic progressive Jan Schakowsky against a little-known Chicago Republican ward committeeman named Kurt Eckhardt.

A profile of the race in today's Wilmette Life newspaper includes the candidates' take on a variety of issues, including marijuana decriminalization. With Schakowsky, no surprise:

She would increase federally funded drug education and treatment programs and decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana.

And then there's the challenger, who says the incumbent is unable to represent what he calls the mainstream values of the district's constituents.

Except on decrim. Eckhardt's position on drug issues:

Eckhardt supports decriminalization of small amounts of marijuana possession, and he supports federally funded drug treatment and education programs.

This issue is ceasing to be controversial. Hopefully, when they talk about decriminalization, they mean the real thing: taking it away from law enforcement altogether.
