Wardriving. . .and how to prevent it

Someone has come up with a paint that contains minute metal filaments.  With it you can create your own "secure" room or house that would prevent someone, say Adam Curry (wink, wink), from using the "neighborhood" WiFi.  Where I live there are at least 6 unprotected WiFi networks available to me. . . The only rub: The paint is water based so you have to paint it on the inside of your house!

This week in Palo Alto. . .$25,000 an inch

The big news around town: Someone at a "career day" told 8th grade students that they could make $250,000 a year as exotic dancers and that each 2 inches of bust line were worth $50,000 a year.  People are shocked, c'mon most of these middle schoolers, whether we like it or not, know more about the "real world" (and you know what I mean) that we did when we were in college!

When freeware isn't free. . .

The creators of the free (as in free beer) Paint.Net application were rolling on the floor with laughter when they saw that someone had posted an auction on eBay not only selling their product but charging $6.95 shipping-and-handling for something you can download for free.

I've heard two of the best songs I've heard in ages on the Alternative/Modern Rock channel: Signing Emo and recently Ikea.

Manic Minute Recommendation: Listen, damn it, listen!

Outsourcing. . . To Oklahoma!

http://news.com.com/Riding+an+offshoring+backlash+in+Oklahoma/2061-1022_3-5537269.html?part=rss&;tag=5537269&subj=news.1022.5

In my continuing focus on "homeshoring", News.com reports "It's now a certifiable trend, [pushing] to use low-cost domestic operations to snag tech spending that might otherwise go offshore"  Now we're really talking cowbell!!

Post-punk laptop rap. . .

You should all check out a friend of mine, MC Lars (aka Andrew Nielsen) over at www.mclars.com He's a Stanford University student who's taking off from his senior year. . . To go on tour, do a video for MTV and more all based on intelligent and funny music/rap that he produces himself.  Right now he's on Yahoo Launch, IndieFeed and a huge hit in the UK and down under.  You're gonna love iGeneration and Signing Emo.

My favorite line: "I hope I die before I get sold!"

Podcast of the day. . .

The Firesign Theater

The comedy quartet that inspired many of the most memorable phrases stored in my personal associative memory are now podcasting many of their best bits.  Hey, who can forget "Porgy Tirebiter" and "They Never come up into the hills"

Head on over to: http://www.firesigntheatre.com/podcasting

Manic Minute Recommendation: Inhale!

And that's your manic minute for January 14th, 2005
