Because Champaign offers limited curbside recycling and many shops in Champaign have a lot of potential recycling products, they want to help with the stores' recycling. They'll be doing recycling for Za's and Follett's once per week.  They want to expand it to more shops (including bars) in Champaign if they get enough volunteers who are interested.  Please reply to Stephanie at juen@uiuc.edu if you would like to help out with the Green Street Recycling Project and make for a cleaner Champaign.

[Grants] NineSigma Requests Proposals

NineSigma, representing a multi-billion dollar international company, is seeking proposals (technical and cost) for in-situ destruction of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in sediments.  Aroclors 1242 and 1248 were the primary PCB source materials released to the environment and currently present in the target sediments. These PCB source materials have been subjected to natural weathering processes since introduction to the system, as well as a significant extent of biologically mediated dechlorination. Concern over the toxicity and persistence of PCBs in the environment has led NineSigma's client to seek a solution using an in-situ technique that can cost effectively destroy the PCBs, leaves no hazardous or toxic chemicals at the end of process, and does not result in adverse impacts to the river ecosystem. Proposals must be received by March 18, 2005.

WHAT IS AMERICAN WETLANDS MONTH?
American Wetlands Month (May) is a wonderful opportunity for communities to conserve wetlands and help educate others about their importance. Each May, thousands of Americans celebrate the uniqueness,
beauty and importance of wetlands through on-the-ground projects, activities and events. The theme for American Wetlands Month 2005 is  "It Pays to Save Wetlands." Wetlands provide numerous economically valuable goods and services. In addition to supporting the commercial and recreational fishing industries, wetlands provide harvests of trees, cranberries, and wild rice. Wetlands also save communities money by providing water filtration and reducing flooding.

GET PUBLICITY FOR YOUR WETLAND PROJECT
If you are organizing a wetland or watershed event in May (or anytime throughout the year), please take this opportunity to advertise your event on the Izaak Walton League's Web site at www.iwla.org/sos/awm/events. This is the official site for American Wetlands Month events. As the coordinator of American Wetlands Month, the Izaak Walton League directs volunteers and reporters from across the country to this page to find local events.

[Perchlorate] EPA sets reference dose for perchlorate

On Feb. 18, EPA established an official reference dose (RfD) of 0.0007 mg/kg/day of perchlorate. This level is consistent with the recommended reference dose included in the National Academy of Science's January 2005 report. A reference dose is a scientific estimate of a daily exposure level that is not expected to cause adverse health effects in humans.

The perchlorate summary is available on the IRIS Web site at http://www.epa.gov/iris and at http://www.epa.gov/perchlorate.
