Put 'em together and what have you got?

The Devil wears Prada was a billious pile of chickdrek all dolled up in enough noir cocktail dresses to make the Dalhia blush. It's all about labels, as endless name-dropping, cameos and jokes about feeding people to the starving models and the nobility of twelve hundred dollar bags are offered up alongside some urban winterscapes swept with rubbish about rising self-esteem, but it's really just about the money and how making and spending more of it can make a better person of you, or at least a better looking person, with a better writing job and better boyfriends, husbands and better places to live, but mosly better clothes. Your "Bet on Betty" in the horserace for the best actress nod is leading lady Meryl Streep for going forcefully sans makeup a stretch at her age, and in a such a dignified manner as to almost save the flick. Now voyager, that's some best acting!

Cinderella III, A Twist in Time. Animated on DVD was a bibbidy-bobbidy-boo fest my granddaughters really enjoyed but I couldn't sit through twice. This sequel has to do with Ugly Stepmother gaining control of Fairy Godmother's magic wand, going back in time, and trying to marry Ugly Stepsister Anastasia off to Prince Charming using fairy magic to progressively erased her nose until she looks like Cinderella, but then off it goes and disappears completely, given over to two shadings which only hint at being the nostrils in the final, even more perfect Cinderella, the Princess Anastasia. Ever after happiness is won in a final battle between Lucifier the evil naked housecat and the well-spoken, beautifully dressed servant mice to remind us that we are dealing with royality here, so hush, it's only a bedtime story.

Expect lots more limey bashing at the Oscars and hopefully we can shut them out this time and send those cut and runners back to Old Blighty with their ugly, trecherous old Bitch Queen Elizabeth II. Curse their hamfisted trans-sexual Prime Ministers like Maggie Thatcher, aka Old Iron Pants Sue. Guess what happened to their pal Ronny Reagan in his big Hollywood breakthrough back in forty-two? Yup! You guessed it...Cut in half! Flopperoo! "Where's the rest of me?" he cries. Heh, she doesn't impress the Los Angelinos, because we have our own short Queen Elizabeth two. Yes, Bette will be there too, nominated for best photography, a karmic nomination if their ever was one. The Black Dalhia meets the Black Beauty and they prance around in the Hollywood horsey set for a while.

Sixty years ago, the 20th. Academy Awards were held on March 13 at the Shrine. Jack Benny hosted and The Best Years of Our Lives William Wyler's mawkish masterpiece, a pean to WWII movie veterans took home the top prize. War nostalgia, so soon? Staying ahead of the next big thing. The next day the LA Times reported the discovery of some male clothing and a suicide note at Venice Beach, but no body was ever found, not all that unusual for the long distance swimmers, Hollywood's losers who particularly preffered this way out west, the day after, to the razor's edged, or more Eshter Blodgett's. Tour the Frederick March to the sea, where a starfish is born, see the Queen Mary, sorry Charley Tuna's with good taste, when they wants tuna that tastes good. Who's behind those Foster Grants? The man ray who got away.
