Movies and Kids

Wow, I just realized today, that there are a couple of movies that Lillian has seen that I haven't...scary....:)

I started thinking about it because I was going to buy a copy of The Incredibles from Netflix. As I was looking at the page, I noticed that they also had "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, and I was thinking I should get that for Josephine to see, since Lillian and I went and saw that without her.

As I was thinking that, I realized that that sentence should end with "too", as we had gone to see The Incredibles without her as well.

So, then I started thinking about if I had missed any movies that Lillian has seen.

Then it occurred to me that this number is only going to increase.

Ah, parenthood and it's many doubts/fears/traumas....:)

In case you're interested, I think it's only and "Home on the Range". I can live with that list. :) (Well, I would to see "Finding Nemo", but I can live without "Home on the Range"

WBUR Connection and Doctor interrogation

So, on The Connection yesterday they had a show dealing with Army doctors being involved with the interrogations at the Guantanamo bay "Secret Prison".

(don't even mess with me about the "Secret Prison" thing, I'm being semi-sarcastic.)

So, there was some good discussion about how doctors aren't supposed to be doing this kinda thing, since it violates the Hippocratic Oath. There were a few callers who were physicians who, not surprisingly, agreed.

There was also some discussion about how they're supposed to be soldiers first, doctors second. First off, this was soundly beaten to death by the guests on the show, and rightfully so. I think the guy who said that particular line has watched "Patton" too many times (Hey, it's a great flick).

Secondly...let's talk about Rules in Warfare. Now, instead of getting too far afield in "Why We have Rules of Warfare". If there's interest, maybe I'll get into it in another article.

So. Right now, you are, in general supposed to, in "civilized" warfare (ie; a battlefield) not supposed to target medical staff. Sure they get killed, they're on the field, they're part of the unit, but you're not supposed to "target" them.

So, if a Army Doctor is a soldier first..well, let's say I'm an enemy sniper, I see a squad moving into an area. The medic/doctor is going to be a pretty high priority target. Without their medic, every person in a unit wounded is even more of a drag on the unit, because now you have to take actual combatants out of action to care for their comrades.

That way madness lies.

Interesting note: I learned from the discussion that a doctor, even if he is the last officer functioning in a unit cannot take command. I did not know that. (Please, someone let me know if that's wrong.)

Bill Cosby

In my first, and possibly only Bill Cosby post, I first point to this weblog article.

I simply add that I always felt that the comments that got Mr. Cosby in "trouble" last year really had more to do with him taking a negative bent. This time around, it sounds like he is focussing a bit more on "here's how you fix it".

Nobody likes to be told they're a screw-up. Especially if you are. However, in particular, if you're gonna point out that people are screwing up, and you think you are helping by just pointing that they're screwing up, well, think again.

Far too many people take this approach and I'm glad to see Mr. Cosby coming back around to his usual style (it's how most of his comedy worked. Denis Leary he wasn't, which is a good thing. We already have a Denis Leary. :))

Even tech guys get the stupids

So, I downloaded the new version 5.0.1 of Now Up-To-Date. NUTD is what we use at Tech Superpowers to coordinate our schedules and schtuff.

I was intrigued because it purported to have the ability to work with Apple's Address Book. So I download it, and find out that that the connection to Address Book requires this application called Address Book Sync.

So, first off, this isn't what I was really hoping for, but that's O.K., I figure I'll try it out.

So I open Now Contact, select "Sync->Address Book". It launches Address Book Sync and asks me what file I want to sync with.

So I'm looking around and around for an Address Book file. I create a backup Address Book file, and I go into ~/Library/Application Support. I simply cannot find a place that will allow me to select the Address Book file to sync to from Now Contact.

After messing with this for like 30-45 minutes (Checking Google and the support forums at Now Software in the process), and finding no documentation on this program at all, it occurs to me:

Select the Now Contact file that you want to synchronize....

D'oh!

So, it happens to us tech guys too. It's not just you. :)
