I want to be the Internet Curmudgeon.

You know, the old guy who pisses on your grandiose schemes.

I have all the qualifications. I've been there. I've done that. I'm bitter. I'm resentful.

Now I know that curmudgeons are generally older than I am. But we are talking Internet years here.

So please, vote for me.

Antidune Trivia

G.K. Gilbert coined the term "antidune" in a 1914 US Geological Survey Professional Paper entitled "Transportation of debris by running water". The paper reports the results of a series of early flume studies* that Gilbert performed at the University of California in Berkeley. I would love to get a copy of this paper for my library.

*flume studies are a method of studying bedforms and channelized flow. An artificial channel is set up in a laboratory and then flows of various speeds and depths are run through the channel to see how the channel bed interacts with the flow.

Orphan Sites, the opposite of Linkrot

Linkrot describes a process of change on the web, where sites change or disappear, but links to them remain. Searching for the sites yields little but a 404 error.

I just discovered the opposite on my ES Designs website. I have chunks of the site that I haven't linked to in years. The pages are all there, but the links to them have disappeared. They are an orphaned site.

Here is a link to some of my orphans.

Late Night Weblog Surfing

It's mostly random clicking, but I am attracted by interesting names. The biggest disappointment is the long time to download some pages. Folks, time to content should be minimal.

Years ago, I wrote a discussion on this. It should be online somewhere. Time to do a little searching.
