Mayor's stand on City Hall blasted at San Jose debate

With San Jose's mayoral primary election two weeks away, three lesser-known candidates ganged up on an absent Mayor Ron Gonzales at a debate Tuesday night, criticizing his decision to forge ahead with a new City Hall building downtown and his about-face on a proposed power plant in South San Jose.
[San Jose Mercury News]

It's hard to justify the cost of the proposed City Hall in a tanking economy. It was interesting that Jim Cunneen, who was representing the Mayor at the debate, suggested that the primary reason for the escalating costs was a redesign that the public wanted. It was my understanding that Mayor Gonzales was the one who pushed the redesign.

The Real SI arrives today

Big sigh of relief. I don't think I could have waited a week for the real mag.

OmniWeb 4.1sp45 was released earlier today, bringing speed improvements and other incremental enhancements to the Web browser from The Omni Group in Seattle.
[Mac Net Journal]

Listed improvements include:

  • much better Java applet compatibility.
  • HTML/CSS compatibility improvements
  • improved JavaScript support
  • numerous performance improvements

I will give a try today. Hopefully with this beta, I can move back to using OmniWeb fulltime. Except for its performance, it is a superior browser for working with Radio.

Adding Comments

Yesterday, Terry Elliott suggested that I install a commenting feature on Fluid Flow. By a strange coincidence, UserLand released Radio Comments at about the same time as Terry's request. That was enough for me, you can now comment on my posts by clicking on the Comment link.

Terry's site uses comments by YACCS from RateYourMusic.com. YACCS comments are more polished than UserLand's. In addition they have a couple of cool features that Radio Comments currently lack. YACCS comments allow you to see how many comments have been made before you click on the link. You can also get a rss feed from the comment server, so you can view comments to your posts in the news aggregator. The Shifted Librarian provides a tutorial for setting up YACCS on your Radio weblog.

I chose the less polished Radio Comments for Fluid Flow. The primary reason for this choice was that Radio Comments allows me to specify the server where the comments are stored. In addition, I would bet that UserLand quickly applies the features from YACCS that I want to Radio Comments. And if they don't, I can write them myself.
