Urban Wildlife

Last night, the motion sensor in the back yard went off. Looking out the window, I discovered the cause. A young opossum was marking one of the towels hanging on the clothes line. I am always amazed by the wildlife that has adapted to our urban landscape.

Living just 10 blocks from downtown San Jose, we are not just subject to the normal feral cats, rats, and pigeons that you would expect. Raccoons are frequent visitors, as are opossum. A truly bizarre sight is seeing an opossum lumbering on the overhead phone lines between telephone poles.

In addition to the small mammals, we have a variety of unexpected birds. Black phoebe, Cooper's hawk, and Anna's hummingbird are all common visitors to the backyard.

I never would have expected the variety of life outside my window here, but I enjoy it.
