Water

This is kind of a follow on from my last post.

Most people don't realize how precious water is. We turn on a tap and there it is. We take it for granted. But we shouldn't. Two recent observations have driven this home to me.

In May, we were on St. John in the Virgin Islands. The islands are a desert surrounded by salt water. While there, we had one brief rain that lasted less than a minute. After it passed, an anole darted out to lap up the few drops on a yucca leaf before they evaporated.

Then today, I was watering my garden in the patio room. After I splashed the basil pot, I noticed a mantis, who had been hidden in the basil, out on a dried leaf drinking from the drops.

These two critters have more sense than we do. They recognize how precious water is. They have a passion for it that we need to learn. We need to savor our drink, it could be our last.
