       As usual, I spoke too soon. The Harvard Weblogs project now has a directory. It sorts sites by the number of hits and will generate navigation when the number of sites exeed 100.
I am not sure if sorting by total hits is the best approach, it places new weblogs at a distinct disadvantage. Sorting by hits per day provides a much more fluid view of the weblog community. In absence of an alphabetic listing, you probably need some sort of search function that allows student/readers to locate a specific weblog.
