This morning I had a long conversation with a paranoid, computer-savy PC user. His email has been down since he upgraded Explorer on his primary PC. He said that he is still using win98, because most viruses target win2000 and beyond. And while he knows that win2000+ is a more stable operating system, it is too vulnerable to attack from the internet.
I tell him get a Mac. He tells me they cost too much. He tells me he can get a top of the line PC for $1200. I tell him that he can get a great Mac for $2000, and that he doesn't need the top of the line, because he isn't making major motion pictures. It is still too expensive.
And then he details all of the ways that he is making his business safe from attack on the internet, unplugging his cable modem, running three different virus protection apps, etc, etc. All the time, he is devising ways to make it safer. And I can only think, he is spending more than the $800 difference between a PC and Mac.
I don't have any of those problems or concerns. I guess that I am paying a premium, but that is exactly why I am willing to pay a premium price.
