For the last month or so I have subscribed to RSS feeds that provide local news. The hope was to get better local news in a more timely fashion. The result is that I am getting a better variety of news, but it is really no quicker than the morning paper.

I am using topix.net for news from Los Altos, Gilroy and San Jose. Any finer/closer definition yields too many duplicate stories. These three generate a nice mix of north county, south county and San Jose stories. While they do provide stories from the local TV stations, the news still arrives a couple hours late. You can't use the feeds to figure out what is happening now.

The feeds do provide a greater variety of sources than I can usually get. I get stories from the Gilroy Dispatch or the San Jose State Spartan Daily. And they provide better local reporting than the San Jose Mercury News.

So in general, the local feeds are a plus, I just wish they could provide news a little quicker.

Dave Winer asks: I lived two blocks from the minor league baseball stadium. Why didn't I ever go to a game? [Scripting News]

This is right up there with, I have lived in California for over 40 years and never been to Kings Canyon or Sequoia National Parks. I have made steps in the right direction, though. After discovering minor league baseball in San Jose a few years ago, I bought season tickets this year. It has been a thoroughly enjoyable season.

I met new neighbors, some who live a few blocks away, others more than few miles. I have also reconnected with friends who jump when you ask if they want to see a ballgame. And then with the give-aways, I won't have to pay for a Wendy's hamburgers for the rest of the year. All in All, a season with the San Jose Giants was a great deal.
