While political heavy weights slug this out, I try to recall Febuary 28, 1969. I can't. But I was probably at my next door neighbor's house celebrating his 8th birthday. I had turned 8 just a couple of months earlier.
I didn't know that we had soldiers getting killed in Viet Nam. I knew that the New York Jets had beaten my beloved Baltimore Colts in the Super Bowl. That was the extent of my tragedy that winter.
My point is that most of us were not around or were not paying attention to the events of the day. To make a big deal of it now is silly.
The only reason to make a big deal of it, is to deflect questions about your past. If you can't defend your past, attack your opposition. That's leadership?
A true leader would stand up and say, "yes I dodged the draft, because I didn't believe that we were fighting a just war" or "I dodged the war because my family was rich, so I didn't have to go". Now, we know that ain't gonna happen.
